Haiti Faces Unprecedented Food Insecurity, WFP Sounds the Alarm

Haiti is experiencing one of the worst food crises in its recent history. According to the latest report from the World Food Programme (WFP), in collaboration with FAO and other partners, over 5.7 million people are currently facing acute food insecurity, representing more than half of the Haitian population. Among them, nearly 2 million are classified in Phase 4 (emergency), and over 8,000 people are confronting Phase 5, the most critical level, synonymous with famine. This alarming situation places Haiti among the countries most affected by hunger worldwide. A Multifaceted Crisis This food crisis is the result of several combined factors. On one hand, armed violence and gang conflicts, particularly in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, have forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes, while blocking access to markets, schools, and basic services. On the other hand, the country's economic collapse, marked by high inflation, has made food products inaccessible for a large part of the population. Agricultural harvests have also been disrupted by climatic events and persistent insecurity in rural areas. Serious Consequences for the Most Vulnerable Children, pregnant women, the elderly, and internally displaced persons are the most affected. In many makeshift camps across the country, families survive on a single meal per day, often nutritionally inadequate. WFP also reports that nearly 500,000 students risk no longer receiving school meals due to lack of funding. A Call for International Solidarity Faced with this dramatic situation, WFP has launched an urgent appeal for $46 million to continue its humanitarian operations in the country. These funds will enable the provision of food assistance to approximately 2 million people in the coming months, particularly in the most exposed areas. The program also plans to strengthen resilience projects, such as supporting local agricultural production and integrating Haitian products into school meals. An Urgent Response is Needed The food crisis in Haiti is not inevitable. With coordinated support from the international community and national efforts to restore security, humanitarian access, and economic stability, it is still possible to avert a major humanitarian catastrophe.
