Arnel Bélizaire Arrested for Assaulting a Vendor in Jacmel

JACMEL, Haiti.— The former deputy for Delmas-Tabarre was arrested on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 30, following a violent altercation with a vendor. UDMO South-East agents, accompanied by a justice of the peace, took the former parliamentarian into police custody for assaulting the woman in question.

The political activist turned businessman is not well-regarded by the people of Jacmel due to his fits of anger and his habit of brandishing his revolver to settle disputes. News of the assault quickly spread through the city, prompting a strong reaction from residents and the media.

According to eyewitnesses, the former parliamentarian was allegedly involved in a violent altercation with a clairin vendor, which occurred near the hotel where he resides. The circumstances of this confrontation are particularly troubling. According to the testimonies gathered, the quarrel was reportedly triggered by the vendor's refusal to accept a romantic invitation from Bélizaire the previous day.

Disappointed and furious at this perceived disdain, the former parliamentarian reacted violently, witnesses reported, noting that he overturned the woman's merchandise, demolished her stall, and inflicted physical violence upon her.

The victim's cries attracted the attention of nearby residents, who then rushed to intervene and put an end to the assault. In response to the crowd rushing towards him, Bélizaire brandished a firearm, threatening the surrounding witnesses.

The victim, who has ties to an influential lawyer in the region, immediately decided to file a complaint at the police station, leading to the former deputy's immediate arrest in front of his place of residence.
